Small Range Rover confirmed for production

Gaydon, Warwickshire, 24 September 2009 – Land Rover has confirmed today a production version of its exciting LRX concept car will be built. The new car will debut next year and join the Range Rover line-up in 2011.

Designed and engineered at Land Rover’s state of the art Gaydon facility, the new Range Rover will be the smallest, lightest and most efficient vehicle the company has ever produced.

The new car will be built at the multi award-winning plant in Halewood, on Merseyside, subject to quality and productivity agreements and will be sold in over 100 countries around the world.

Phil Popham, managing director of Land Rover said: “The production of a small Range Rover model is excellent news for our employees, dealers and customers. It is a demonstration of our commitment to investing for the future, to continue to deliver relevant vehicles for our customers, with the outstanding breadth of capability for which we are world-renowned.”

“Feedback from our customer research also fully supports our belief that a production version of the LRX Concept would further raise the desirability of our brand and absolutely meet their expectations.” Phil added.

Gerry McGovern, Land Rover design director said “The new vehicle will be a natural extension to the Range Rover line-up, complementing the existing models and helping to define a new segment. It will be true to the concept and have many recognizable Range Rover design cues including the signature clamshell bonnet, the floating roof and the solid ‘wheel-at-each-corner’ stance.” More details of the new small Range Rover will be released next year.

Who doesn’t love a tease? Land Rover is presenting a Holland & Holland Range Rover edition – but they’re only showing off teaser images for now. All you’ll see are concept drawings and a covered mock up of 2010′s Range Rover, which was the basis for this Holland & Holland Edition. So, who exactly are Holland & Holland…

Holland & Holland are bespoke sporting gun and rifle makers, founded in London in 1835 by Harris Holland, who was later joined by his nephew Henry to create the eponymous brand. Overfinch,  in charge of this vehicle and all its performance beauty, is a high-end luxury sports car builder. Details are limited, the teaser image suggests the SUV will feature an exclusive four-seat arrangement, including a refrigerated console dividing the two rear seats. In the cargo compartment, a massive wood chest with pull out drawers has been installed. Fans of Special Edition Range Rovers such as this will have to wait until September for an official unveiling. The Holland & Holland Range Rover was conceived with a single intention: to create an all purpose, all season, luxury supercar for the discerning few. Designers and engineers at both Holland & Holland and Overfinch have worked together to create a car that embodies Holland & Holland’s unique sporting heritage and Overfinch’s bespoke craftsmanship. The result is a quintessentially English take on luxury.

Overfinch is a design-led engineering company that has over the last 34 years built a luxury brand. Based in Farnham, Surrey, they operate on five continents and are the originators of the performance Range Rover. It was in 1975, only a few years after the Range Rover was launched, that Schuler (later to become Overfinch) built their first high performance derivative.

During that time, their in house design and engineering departments have enjoyed a close working relationship with Land Rover, starting with the development of the first ever automatic Range Rover and notably including a Paris Dakar win on behalf of Land Rover France in 1981.

Overfinch are the only company in the world building bespoke Range Rovers as their sole business.

While most of the world’s most hard-core off-roaders – Toyota Land Cruiser, Mercedes G-Wagen, Hummer H2 – have all gone luxed-out, the Defender soldiers on as the bare-bones option. Essentially the same body-on-frame design from 1948, the Defender is still hand-assembled. But what’s Land Rover to do when the market demands luxury? Lux out the Defender, of course.

The limited-production Fire & Ice editions come packed with all the features they could fit in the Defender: Recaro buckets, leather and Alcantara trim, diamond-turned alloys, color-coded head- and tail- lights, glass sunroof panel, running boards and more. The Fire edition comes in a special Vesuvius Orange metallic paint, the Ice edition in Alaska white, both offset by Santorini black accents. All that kit drives the price of the special Land Rover up to €68,400, the equivalent of about $95,000. Just 850 examples will be on offer in various markets across Europe, China and in South Africa. This rendering represents an idea of what the artist feels could be the next Range Rover. The basis is obviously the LRX Concept car which made its world debut at Geneva a year ago. With current buzzwords like ‘lightweight’ and ‘economy’ taking the front seat at the expense of words like ‘massive’ and ‘power’, the rendering focuses on the supposed use of lightweight materials.

Aerodynamics is important so the design is geared towards an SUV that cuts through the air as quickly and efficiently as possible. The use of LED lights will be as widespread as xenon technology within the next 10 years. Designers find it easy to work with LEDs because the diodes are flexible and give them lots of liberties with design. For this piece of art the artist has decided to keep the Range’s classic lines as a way of preserving some of what we know as cars for future generations to marvel at. Nothing was said of the powertrain but something like a hybrid or a full-on electric drive system would be the one used.

Your personalized Platinum R Range Rover Sport is fitted with wide body arching side skirts, front and rear bumpers, a new front grill, side vents and Concept802 exhaust tips.
