When you want to go off road but don’t think polluting mother nature with gaseous fumes is a good thing…well you’re right. But Land Rover has a solution with their all new Freelander 2 hybrid system.

Land Rover has their Freelander 2 TD4_e equipped with a fuel-saving intelligent start/stop system – and they showed it off at the 2008 Paris Motor Show. TD4_e is scheduled to go into production before next year, and is the first piece of Land Rover Green technology, with more to come down the line. This will all be part of Rover’s eco-friendly e_TERRAIN program.

Land Rover reports an eight percent reduction in emissions, and a fuel economy increase from 37.7 mpg to 41.3 mpg. To handle the increased demand on the starter, the Freelander 2 TD4_e features a starter motor and a more durable absorption glass-mat battery. There’s also a battery monitoring system allows the driver to keep track of the electrical system’s condition, and the climate control has an auxiliary water pump to keep the cabin temperature consistent when the engine is stopped. Freelander 2’s off-road capability is unaffected by the start/stop system, which can be disengaged if the driver so chooses.
